Glucose V’s Fructosamine Diabetic Testing in Cats

Fructosamine measurements are helpful for diagnosing and monitoring diabetes in our feline friends. To diagnose diabetes mellitus, we need to look at elevated fasting blood and urine glucose levels, crucial indicators. This condition is often seen in middle-aged and older cats, but diagnosing it can be tricky. Cats can get stressed during vet visits, which can lead to higher glucose levels.

It’s also worth noting that blood glucose can rise slightly after meals, so vets may need to take several blood samples over a few days to confirm a diabetes diagnosis. Plus, blood glucose levels can drop if the samples aren’t stored correctly, or they can spike if the samples aren’t separated right after collection.

On the bright side, fructosamine levels provide a more stable picture! They give us an average of blood glucose levels over a longer period and don’t require fasting. This means a single blood test can be used to check for diabetes and help with long-term monitoring. So, fructosamine testing is a great way to support our diabetic cats and make sure they stay healthy!
